Canadian Bank Statements for a Schengen Visa (2026)
Financial proof is where most Schengen applications from Canada actually get decided. The rules themselves are set by the destination consulate, not by Canada — but how you produce acceptable statements depends entirely on which Canadian bank you use, and that is where applicants get caught out. This page covers how much to show in CAD, which banks can stamp a statement and which cannot, and how to use CRA documents to back up your balance.
This page assumes you are a Canadian resident holding a non-visa-exempt passport — permanent resident, study or work permit holder, or refugee travel document holder. Canadian passport holders are visa-exempt for short stays. For the full document set, see our Schengen visa document checklist for Canada residents.

How Much to Show, in CAD
There is no single Canada-wide figure. Each Schengen state publishes a daily subsistence minimum, and your target is that daily rate multiplied by your nights, plus a margin. The table below converts the common thresholds at €1 ≈ C$1.50.
| Destination | Daily minimum | 14-day trip | 30-day trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italy | €120/day | C$2,520 | C$5,400 |
| Spain | €100/day | C$2,100 | C$4,500 |
| Iceland | €85/day | C$1,785 | C$3,825 |
| Portugal | €75/day | C$1,575 | C$3,375 |
| France | €65/day | C$1,365 | C$2,925 |
| Germany / Greece | €50/day | C$1,050 | C$2,250 |
| Lithuania | €40/day | C$840 | C$1,800 |
| Estonia / Finland | €30/day | C$630 | C$1,350 |
Converted at €1 ≈ C$1.50. The CAD–EUR rate moves, so check the live rate before you finalise your file — and note that consulates assess the euro figure, not the Canadian one.
Two adjustments specific to Canadian applicants:
- Prepaid costs do not reduce the requirement as much as people expect. Some consulates deduct fully prepaid accommodation; many simply want the daily minimum visible regardless. Assume no deduction unless the consulate says otherwise.
- Do not bank on a favourable exchange rate. If the loonie weakens between your statement date and your appointment, a balance that cleared the threshold on paper may not. The 20–30% margin absorbs this.
The Canadian Stamping Problem
Most Schengen consulates prefer statements that carry a bank stamp and a signature. That is straightforward if you bank at a branch and genuinely difficult if you do not — and a large share of Canadian applicants now bank entirely online. This is the single most common practical obstacle for applicants filing from Canada.
| Bank type | Examples | Can it stamp? | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big Five branch banks | RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC | Yes, at any branch | Print statements from online banking, take them to a teller and ask for a branch stamp and signature on each page. |
| Regional / co-operative | Desjardins, National Bank, ATB, Vancity, provincial credit unions | Yes, at any branch | Same process. Desjardins is the practical default for Quebec applicants filing in Montreal. |
| Branchless / challenger | Tangerine, EQ Bank, Simplii, Wealthsimple Cash, Neo | No — no counter exists | Submit the official PDF unaltered. If a stamp is demanded, have the printout certified by a commissioner of oaths, or lead with a Big Five account instead. |
Three things make an unstamped PDF far more likely to be accepted:
- Download the official statement PDF, not a screenshot or a CSV export. The generated statement carries the institution's name and branding; a screenshot of your balance carries nothing and reads as unverifiable.
- Submit every page, including the blank final page. "Page 3 of 4" with page 4 missing is one of the most common reasons financial proof gets queried — see our Schengen visa rejection reasons for Canada applicants.
- Pair it with a government-issued corroborating document — which for Canadian residents means CRA paperwork, covered next.
Tangerine and EQ Bank statements are routinely accepted when they clearly show the institution name, your full legal name and the activity history. The risk is not that they are rejected outright; it is that a consulate with a strict stamping policy leaves you scrambling days before an appointment. If your only account is branchless and your appointment is close, open nothing new — a brand-new account with a single large deposit looks considerably worse than an unstamped PDF from a real one.
Using CRA Documents as Corroboration
This is the strongest advantage Canadian residents have, and it is under-used. A bank statement shows a balance; it does not prove the money is yours to keep. CRA documents provide independent, government-issued confirmation of your income, which is exactly what an officer is trying to establish.
- Notice of Assessment (NOA) — download from CRA My Account for your most recent filed tax year. This is the single most valuable supporting financial document available to you. It states assessed income from a source you cannot edit.
- T4 slip — your employer's statement of employment income for the same year. Pair it with the NOA so the two agree.
- T4A / T2125 — for pension income or self-employment. If you are self-employed, the T2125 business statement plus your NOA does the work an employment letter would otherwise do.
- Proof of Income Statement (Option C printout) — also from CRA My Account, and useful when you need a single clean summary page rather than a full NOA.
The goal is a consistent story across three documents: your NOA says you earn a given amount, your pay stubs show that amount arriving on schedule, and your statements show the resulting balance. When those three agree, the balance stops being a question.
Certification and Notarization in Canada
Notarization is usually unnecessary. Consulates in Canada generally accept statements printed from online banking, with a branch stamp where one is available. Reach for certification only when your only account is branchless, or when the specific consulate asks for certified copies.
Who can certify depends on your province, because Quebec runs a civil-law system:
- Common-law provinces (everywhere except Quebec) — a notary public, lawyer, or commissioner of oaths. Commissioners are widely available and markedly cheaper than notaries; many municipal offices, registry agents and paralegals offer the service.
- Quebec — a notaire (a full legal professional, not the common-law equivalent) or a commissaire à l'assermentation. Expect Quebec notarial fees to run higher than a commissioner elsewhere.
Ask for certification of a true copy of the statement. You are not asking anyone to vouch for the balance being sufficient — only that the printout matches the original document.
What Counts Toward Your Balance
Counts as liquid funds:
- Chequing account balance
- Savings account balance, including high-interest savings
- Combined totals across multiple Canadian accounts, provided you submit statements for each
- GICs that mature before or during your trip (include the maturity date)
Does not count as liquid funds:
- Credit card limits — this is borrowed money, and submitting a credit limit as proof of funds actively damages an application
- Line of credit or HELOC availability — same reasoning
- RRSP balances — withdrawal is taxable and penalised, so consulates do not treat it as spendable
- Locked-in GICs maturing after your return
- Cryptocurrency balances
The useful middle ground: TFSA and non-registered investment accounts. A TFSA is genuinely withdrawable without penalty, which is a real argument in your favour, but it is not a chequing account and should not be your headline figure. Submit these as secondary evidence of overall financial health — particularly valuable when your chequing balance looks modest relative to a solid NOA.
Common Situations
"My balance is low right now"
Do not borrow money and deposit it shortly before applying. A large unexplained deposit against a thin history is one of the clearest negative signals there is. Better options, in order: delay the appointment and build the balance with regular deposits over two to three months; combine several of your own accounts; or use a sponsor properly documented with our Schengen visa sponsorship letter templates.
"I'm a new arrival to Canada with only a few months of history"
Common among recent PRs and international students, and manageable. Submit whatever Canadian history exists, then add statements from your home-country bank for the preceding months so the officer sees continuity rather than a balance appearing from nowhere. A settlement-funds transfer that matches your COPR is a helpful, verifiable explanation.
"I'm on a study permit and my parents fund me"
Then their documents carry the financial weight, and you must show the relationship and their capacity: their statements, their income proof, a sponsorship letter naming you, and proof of relationship. Your own statement still matters as evidence of day-to-day support arriving in Canada.
"Large irregular deposits"
Explain them in the cover letter before anyone has to ask — a tax refund, a bonus, a vehicle sale, an RRSP withdrawal. One factual sentence with a supporting document neutralises the concern. Unexplained round-number deposits are what draw scrutiny.
"Joint account with my spouse"
Acceptable. Submit the statement together with your marriage certificate, and if only one of you is travelling, a brief note that the funds are available to the applicant. If both names appear, consulates typically do not halve the balance, but do not rely on the full amount counting twice if you both apply.
Complete your visa file
Financial proof only convinces when the rest of the file agrees with it. Line up a refundable hotel booking, a flight reservation you have not paid for, and €30,000+ travel insurance so your stated trip cost matches the balance you are showing. Processing timelines for Canadian applicants are on our Schengen visa processing time from Canada page.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much money do I need in my Canadian bank account for a Schengen visa?
It depends on the destination's daily minimum and your trip length, not on one Canada-wide number. At roughly €1 = C$1.50, a fourteen-day trip needs about C$1,050 for Germany or Greece, about C$2,100 for Spain, and about C$2,520 for Italy. Add 20–30% on top.
Can Tangerine, EQ Bank or Wealthsimple statements be stamped?
No — they are branchless, so there is no counter to stamp anything. Their official PDF statements are still routinely accepted when they show the institution name, your full legal name and the transaction history. If a consulate insists on a stamp, either lead with a Big Five branch account or have the printout certified as a true copy by a commissioner of oaths.
Do I need my statements notarized?
Usually not. Online statements printed from your bank, with a branch stamp where available, are normally enough. Certification matters mainly for branchless-only applicants or where a consulate specifically requests certified copies. In common-law provinces a commissioner of oaths is the cheapest route; in Quebec use a notaire or commissaire à l'assermentation.
Does my CRA Notice of Assessment help?
Considerably, and it is under-used. The NOA is independent government confirmation of assessed income, which corroborates the deposits on your statements in a way no self-printed document can. Download it from CRA My Account and pair it with your most recent T4.
Do RRSP or TFSA balances count?
Not as your primary liquid proof. RRSP withdrawals are taxed and penalised, so consulates do not treat them as spendable. TFSA and non-registered investments sit in the middle: legitimate secondary evidence of financial stability, but not your headline figure.
How many months of statements do I need?
Three months is the common baseline; six months is safer if your income is irregular or your balance fluctuates. France and Spain more often ask for six. Submitting more than requested is not penalised — submitting fewer is.
Should I convert my CAD statements to euros?
No. Submit them in CAD as your bank issues them. Do not annotate or alter the document. If you want to help the officer, state the euro equivalent and the rate you used in your cover letter instead.
Can I black out transaction details?
No. Redacted statements are frequently treated as tampered documents. If a specific transaction genuinely needs context, explain it in the cover letter rather than hiding it.
How recent must the statements be?
The most recent statement should be dated within about a month of your appointment, ideally within two weeks. A closing balance from three months ago invites the question of what the balance is today.
