Proof of Accommodation for a France Visa in Paris

Most Paris accommodation problems are not about which hotel you booked — they are about how the address is written. The France Schengen visa application form asks for your temporary address in the Schengen area, and that address has to match your booking confirmation exactly. When the two disagree, the file goes back for further documents and you lose one to two weeks. The Paris address block, written correctly

A Paris address has a structure French consulate staff read every day, and anything that deviates from it looks like a document that was not issued by the hotel. Write it in this order, on the form and in your cover letter:

Four details are where applications actually go wrong:

• The postcode carries the arrondissement. Paris postcodes run 75001 to 75020, and the last two digits are the arrondissement — 75003 means the 3rd. Never write "Paris 3e" instead of the postcode, and never write the generic 75000, which no hotel address uses.
• Keep the French street type. Rue, Boulevard, Avenue, Place, Quai, Impasse. Do not translate "Rue de Bretagne" into "Bretagne Street" — the address then no longer matches the PDF.
• The street number comes first, before the street name, and it is written without any suffix. If the hotel confirmation says "34 bis", keep the "bis".
• Accents are safe to keep. Copy the hotel name as the confirmation prints it, including Hôtel. If the form field rejects accented characters, drop them consistently rather than half-way.

What your confirmation PDF must show

A screenshot of a search result is not proof of accommodation. The document you submit has to be the confirmation the platform emailed you, and it has to carry all of the following. Open your own PDF and check it line by line:

• Your name as the lead guest, spelled as in your passport — surname and given names in the same form.
• Full hotel address including the 750XX postcode, plus a hotel phone number.
• Check-in and check-out dates that sit inside your stated travel dates and leave no night unaccounted for.
• A booking reference or reservation number that a consulate could quote back to the hotel.
• Number of guests, matching the number of applicants that confirmation is meant to cover.
• The cancellation terms — these can say free cancellation. That is fine, and it is better than an unexplained blank.

If your booking is split across two Paris hotels, submit both confirmations and make sure the check-out date of the first is the check-in date of the second. A one-night gap between them is exactly the kind of inconsistency that triggers a document request.

Book refundable, for the right reason

Book accommodation that is refundable because your travel plans are not final until the visa decision arrives — that is the honest and correct reason, and it is why free-cancellation inventory exists. What consulates reject is fabricated or bought confirmations, not genuine reservations that happen to be cancellable. So make a real reservation, on a real platform, at a hotel you would actually stay in.

Filter for free cancellation and no prepayment before you book, and check the cancellation deadline is later than your expected decision date. A refundable booking whose free-cancellation window closes before your interview is not much use.

If you are staying with family or friends in Paris

This is a different document path, and it is slower than most applicants expect. France requires an attestation d'accueil — a certificate of accommodation your host applies for in person at the mairie of their commune. It is not a letter your host writes and signs at home, and a self-written invitation letter will not substitute for it.

Your host will need their own ID or residence permit, proof that they live at the address, and proof of sufficient living space; the mairie charges a stamp fee. Because appointment availability in the Paris mairies varies and processing is not instant, start this at least a month before your visa appointment. If your trip mixes both — a few nights with a host, the rest in hotels — you need the attestation for the host nights and confirmations for the hotel nights.

Paris-specific mistakes we see repeatedly

• Booking an address outside Paris and writing "Paris" on the form. Hotels in Saint-Denis (93), Montreuil (93), Boulogne-Billancourt (92) or near the airports at Roissy and Orly are convenient and often cheaper, but their postcodes are not 750XX. Write the real commune. It is not a problem to stay outside the city; it is a problem to misdescribe where you are staying.
• Airport-hotel night not covered. A late arrival at CDG or an early departure often adds a night nobody booked. Count the nights on a calendar, not from memory.
• Dates that contradict the flight reservation. If your itinerary lands 12 April and the hotel starts 13 April, the file has a visible hole. The accommodation and the flight dates must tell the same story.
• Paris as the wrong main destination. Applying to France because you booked Paris hotels, when most of your nights are in Italy or Spain, sends the file to the wrong consulate. The main destination is where you spend the most nights.
• Apartment rentals paid in full. Short-stay apartment platforms usually charge immediately and refund poorly. If you use one before a decision, you are accepting the loss on a refusal.
