Visa Refusal Explanation Letter for Schengen Reapplication 2026
Your previous refusal is already in the Visa Information System — every consulate can see it. The worst thing you can do is ignore it. This letter directly addresses the rejection reason, explains what has changed, and gives the officer a clear reason to approve this time.
Rules for Writing This Letter
- Never deny or hide the refusal — it's in the system; denial looks dishonest
- Be specific about the refusal reason — reference the exact ground checked on your refusal letter
- Show what changed — a new bank balance, a new employer letter, a clearer itinerary — name it specifically
- Attach new evidence — the letter alone means nothing without stronger supporting documents
- Keep it factual — no emotional appeals; visa decisions are administrative, not personal

Dear Visa Officer,
I am reapplying for a Schengen tourist visa to visit [Destination Country] from [Start Date] to [End Date].
I acknowledge my previous application dated [Date] was refused on the ground that the purpose of the intended stay was not sufficiently justified. I understand that my previous cover letter lacked the level of detail required, and I am addressing this fully in this reapplication.
The purpose of my visit is tourism. Specifically, I intend to:

Re: Previous Application Ref. [Reference Number if known] — [Date of Previous Application]
Dear Visa Officer,
I am reapplying for a Schengen tourist visa to visit [Destination Country] from [Start Date] to [End Date].
I acknowledge that my previous application dated [Date] was refused because my intention to leave the Schengen Area before visa expiry could not be ascertained. I recognise that my previous application did not sufficiently demonstrate my ties to [Home Country], and I am addressing this specifically in this submission.
I have the following strong ties to [Home Country] that confirm my return:
Employment:
My employer, [Company Name], has confirmed my employment as [Job Title] since [Date]. I am expected to resume duties on [Return Date]. My employer's letter confirming this, along with 3 months of salary slips, is enclosed. My monthly salary is [Amount + Currency] and I have a stable career in [Home Country].
Property:
I own / rent a property at [Your Address]. [Ownership deed / lease agreement] is enclosed as evidence.
Family:
My [spouse / parents / children] reside with me at the above address and are not travelling. [Names and relationship: e.g., "My wife, [Name], and two children, aged X and X, will remain at home."]
[Optional — Additional ties:]
I am also enrolled in [course / professional commitment] at [institution] which runs until [Date] and requires my presence in [Home Country].
I have no intention of overstaying my visa. The purpose of this trip is a [X]-day holiday, and I have both financial and personal reasons to return promptly.
Yours sincerely,

Most Questions Asked by Visa Applicants
Do I need to mention a previous refusal when reapplying?
Yes — always. The refusal is visible in the VIS system. If you don't address it and the officer sees it on their screen, it looks like you're hiding it. Proactively acknowledging and explaining it is far better.
How soon can I reapply after a Schengen visa refusal?
There is no mandatory waiting period. You can reapply immediately — but only if your documents or circumstances have genuinely changed. Reapplying with identical documents will almost certainly fail again.
Should I appeal or reapply?
Appeal when the embassy made a factual error. Reapply when your documents were weak and can be materially improved. Most applicants are better served by a stronger reapplication than a formal appeal. See our full appeal guide.
